What to Wear? —Layers!

Homeschool Rocks Adventure Course

On Belay!  Belay On! 

Intro to outdoor top rope climbing on new terrain, lava rock!! Remillard Park is the top crag in N. Berkeley. After a morning game, and exploring, we will start the top rope series learning safety equipment, communication and ground management as a class. Everyone will have the opportunity to learn top down approach and take the challenge of rappelling today!

What to Wear? —Layers!

  • Athletic Clothes - capris or outgrown sweats w/the bottom trim cut (no bellbottoms or jeans)

  • Sneakers (not crocs or sandals)

  • Jacket

  • Cap works too!

Homeschool Rocks Adventure Course

It is Homeschool Adventure Rocks Tradition to hike through the tunnel at Bridgeview Tr. The newest of the class takes the challenge!  With brave kids by your side, youll make it through the dark cave and meet coach on the other side! 

Wear: Layers!! Sneakers, hiking boots or shoes that can get wet.  No crocs or designer boots! Bring change of clothes (just in case)

Bring: Water bottle


PARENTS: THERE ARE 5 ENTRY POINTS TO THIS TRAIL SEPARARTED BY A GOLF COURSE AND GREEN SPACE. THE DIRECTIONS CAN BE CONFUSING TO THE TRAILHEAD.  LOOK AT THE MAP AND DIRECTIONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
Meet at the trailhead on Monterey Av--Please be on time (if you dont see me and HWY 13 on the left of you, you are not in the right location)

Homeschool Rocks Adventure Course

Fundamentals and Footwork is magic when it all comes together. Now that we have going up and down on the slab, lets learn HOW to climb. Wear layers, bring/wear socks and sneakers. No crocs or slides. 

Climbing shoes and boulder problems today!  We will start at Indian Rock and end at Mortar Rock (1 block away)

Spotter Ready?! Ready! Boulder?! Boulder On! This crew loves to explore the rocks!  Let's take it outside and do it together!  Today we review safety, commands, pad placement and care while sending the slab and exploring easy boulders

Use the bathroom before heading up the hill to class. Careful crossing the street. For the integrity, interest and safety of class, we would appreciate parents and siblings allow for class space and time to develop w/o distractions. There are tables and benches on both sides of the park.

Homeschool Rocks Adventure Course

Boo!!  Fall (S2) starts today!!  So excited to meet new adventurers!  Let's get welcome new folx at Oaktown Boulders Climbing Gym.  To get ready for land exploration, we'll (re)view bouldering: safety, spotting, climbing games and fun!  

Bring/wear: 

Socks

Water bottle

Snack (no nuts/nut butters please)

Oaktown Boulders 2744 E. 11th Street A11, Oakland. This facility is in the ArtHaus Building in the Fruitvale District of the East Bay. As you approach the building in a residential/part industrial neighborhood, notice the bay door open on the left side of the street. This is our entrance from the street side. Carefully, park along the side and enter through the bay door. If you happen to go through the building, please let the front desk know that you are there for a class in the climbing gym. 

Please arrive on time and pick up participant on time. Parents may enjoy personal time and use of the ArtHaus building which includes WiFi, work and reading space, coffee, health lunches and snack machines. 

There are many bathrooms in the the building, just not in the climbing gym. Please use the bathroom prior to class. 

-Welcome to wear a costume as long as it does not impede movement.

Last class of the session blends land and water as we say thank you to Oshun for holding our energy, keeping us safe.  We will take a beautiful hike at Shoreline Trail: Salt Marsh Overlook


Nature Arts Today!  If you have a cellphone, bring it!  Its ok if you dont, you will do more hands on nature work!

Wear:
Comfortable hiking shoes/sneakers

Favorite walking stick/walking poles

WHAT'SUP! Standup paddle boarding is water liberation! Our last class on the water is full of independence and confidence! We will paddle out to the swimming hole and have a splash!

  • Aqua socks or strap back sandals are recommended.

Let’s get on the water. Today we are kayaking after a ground stroke school review water entry/exit and clean up we will paddle in the lagoon to learn Oakland donuts and paddling backwards!
 

Wear-

Fall Session 1 of Homeschool Rocks kicks off today! For our school, let's jump in the pool!  The newly renovated Roberts Park Pool is a great place to kick off the season!  

Bring/Wear:

  • Bathing suit

  • Sunscreen

  • Aqua socks/pool shoes

Bring: 

  • Towel change of dry clothes (temperature can dip quickly in the hills).

  • Water bottles, lunch.

Arrive early to change and feel free to cool in the pool until practice starts! 

Parking-Inform the ranger at the kiosk if you are just dropping off.  If parents plan to stay, parking is $5. After transition, we invite you to take a hike and rest in the Redwoods during practice.  

Parent/driver pick up - Please arrive at 5p to assist w/changing needs.

Mindfulness of foot movement is best trained on a hike! Taking a break from the rock climbing module,  Bridgeview to Old Canon Trail provides a unique training experience in balancing, traversing, focus and core tension. 

Note: There are 3 trailhead entrances. We are meeting at the Monterey Blvd next to 13.  Use these GPS coordinates: 37.81787, -122.20479


Wear sneakers, boots that can get muddy. Bring walking sticks too!

Program Note: Due to a TFS event in Yosemite, Peak Team will be resting 5/2. We resume practice 5/9

Enjoy the Process

Sun is peaking! Wear sunscreen/hat. On Belay?! Belay On! Climbing?! Climb On! We are heading up the hill to start our climbing module! Helmets, Harnesses, Chalkbags! Today we learn all about our gear and how to keep each other safe outside, reviewing equipment, safety, partner checks commands/communications and climbing!

Let’s go on a scramble! Today we explore pressure, stability and mindfulness on rock! We’ll also take up space learning outdoor climbing safety and etiquette. Meet at Indian Rock in N. Berkeley. Dress warm, in layers, bring or wear socks. Warm tea or cocoa is always nice for a morning session!
